My (Un-Edited) e-Interview for Hindustan Times

My Wife's 'maana-hua' bhai, Nikhil Dixit's wife Sweta, works for Hindustan Times. She was covering the issue which recently was raked up by Raj Thackeray & was infamous for causing all the political uporaor in the state, not to mention un-necessary simmering hatred amongst fellow indians, violence in the state. The damage to life and property following this incident always gets under-played, somehow, which i find ridiculous at times.

Anyways, Sweta sent me a questionnaire which i had to respond: Although my 2 page responses had to be cut down, bcos of space constraints, here's the whole thing un-edited:

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself? Your age, profession, the number of years you have been abroad, a little bit about your family background, education and years in Maharashtra?

I am 31 year old IT professional & although I have been out of India for almost 6 years now ( 2 in Singapore & 4 in US ), like almost most Indians, I have been in touch with most of the happenings, back there in India. I do usually go back there almost every 2-3 years, on a 2-3 week vacation. I have been happily married for almost 6 years now and have a 2 year old daughter.
Both my parents (retired now) have been bankers all their lives, which they served for almost 25+ years of their lives. I have an elder sister who is 3 years elder to me, happily married with a 10 year old son. She works in a real estate company & my brother-in-law works for a multi-national gear manufacturing company.
I have a B.E(Computers) degree from a New Mumbai COE, 1998. I have been a Mumbai-ite, since my birth and I feel, if anyone who lives and survives in Mumbai, can do so in any part of the world.

2. What is your reaction to what is happening in Maharashtra?
3. Do you agree with Raj Thackeray or the Shiv Sena when they say that the influx of migrants into Mumbai should be curbed? Could you please explain with reasons?

I will answer qsn 2 & 3 together.
Now, I think this is in context with “anti-biharis” / “anti-northIndians” etc. This, IMHO, is really weird.

Syed Ali Geelani did this same thing in Kashmir last year and he never got the same kind of mileage from the media. Why is Raj Thackeray being covered so much? Just because all is happening in the commercial capital of the country? Something I can’t understand. You, the media, any answers please? Or is it just for the same lame reason? “This stuff is Printable” !!! Eh, but at what cost to the nation? Does anyone frigging care?

On a different note, pardon me if I am wrong but isn’t Maharashtra one of the states in India? Or is it a country in itself? D-uh ! So why should a citizen of India be marginalized & targeted against migrating from one state to another? Isn’t that his right to move freely in his/her country, in search of work, better prospects or maybe, even to start a new life?

“Influx of migrants into Mumbai”.. wasn’t that the question? It sounds contradictory in itself. I will ask people who work in the Mumbai daily “Indian Express”, for example. Are all of them Maharashtrians? Doesn’t the girl sitting across your cubicle a Hyderabadi, or the guy who you had crush on.. a Bengali or maybe the receptionist who the guys all drool over.. isn’t she a Gujrati? What are we talking about here? How did they get here in the first place and more importantly, why shouldn’t they? Everyone has a bill to pay !!! Everyone has desires, aspirations & wants to be better in life.

How did all these people from varying languages come to Mumbai? Didn’t their parents migrate years ago? Does anyone of us know @ their family tree lineage farther than their grandfather’s name? Raj Thackeray’s grandfather, Mr Prabodhan Thackeray, himself migrated from some part of erstwhile Madhya Pradesh to Maharashtra. Did Raj even read his grandfather’s book?

Having said that, there will be 2 sides to every coin ; with the good, comes the bad and the ugly tags along. But then, what is the law there for? There are other ways to deal with the other side of heaven i.e the anti-social elements.

Yes, I can understand these strong reactions BUT ONLY when it comes to illegal immigrants from the eastern and western borders of our country ; when these illegal immigrants spark off a radical or separatist thought in our youth, that’s the thing that needs to be addressed on a war footing… not this thing which questions our own countrymen.

What i don’t understand is how easily people who cause such mayhem, damage to life and property because of such extremist opinions owe no accountability to our nation’s laws? Isn’t depriving a fellow Indian, residing in any remote village of India, the right to stay anywhere in his country, anti-nationlistic? Isn’t branding North-Indians the way it was done anti-nationalistic? Are Maharashtrians only residing in Maharashtra?
I shudder to think just what sort of a divide has this whole fiasco created amongst people’s minds and this is what the extremists, from across the border, want to happen. The same country which has posed as FRIENDS, time and again for their own benefit, but who are in fact FIENDS. If you look at it, it’s been there all the time. Part of Kashmir is already separate sinc the early nineties, Punjab faced the Khalistan movement that was fortunately quelled, something is imminent soon @ the whole of North East, most Southern states have been notorious in their defiance to accept Hindi as a national language & have blocked it in several schools.. so some one please tell me, how can we claim to be a secular nation, to the world? The wood of the tree, to me, is intact from the outside but there’s a spark inside it’s trunk. The smoke is there to be seen. The fire is just, a matter of time now.

4. Have you faced hostilities from the people of the country you are in? How have you dealt with such a situation?

I can talk @ us in particular. We haven’t faced any physical hostilities but yes, there have been more subtle ones. Be it in the form of not getting easily accepted in that country’s culture, which I think is understandable to an extent. But if one makes conscious efforts towards it, then it should be appreciated. In that way, Singapore was difficult but the US has been more accommodative, in that regard. In fact, it’s much better in that regard.

5. What is your opinion on the demands of political parties to make Marathi the language of business in Mumbai? There are demands for Marathi signboards, court proceedings in Marathi, etc. Do you think this can work in a city like Mumbai?

I think to convert each and every thing to Marathi is a bit of over-doing it. I mean, there are 100’s of important things to dwelve into, instead of that… like having good infrastructure, bringing more people above the poverty line, providing basic education, food, clothing, shelter to children who can’t afford it, helping orphans stand on their own. i.e. something has to be done at the grass root levels. NGO should be given yearly grants for all such activities.

The problem with India, IMHO, is that corruption is more at the grass-root level. Maybe the govt does allocate money for such activities but by the time, it reaches the concerned after years and years of frustration, it’s probably a miniscule amount.

Besides, all this will be observed by the world and believe me, it will not be taken in a good sense. The time which we are in, it just doesn’t allow us the luxury to go for something new as in today’s world of awareness, time sensitivity and crisp business, any red tape will be seen as an obstacle and hence, it will have monetary effect on the business relationship standards of that country.

6. Do you support the argument that a certain number of jobs in a city or state should be reserved for locals?

I personally think there should be NO reservations for jobs. Jobs should be given on capabilities and merit ONLY. But we all know that can’t happen in our country. Not unless we go from Parliamentary to Presidential Democracy!!! And that, I don’t see happening!!!
Until then, we all have heard the term @ vote-bank politics. I personally feel that no political party would have the balls to take such a step.

Anyways, if reservations are to be kept, then there MUST be a provision that IF those jobs are not filled by that state people, in that time-period, then it should be open to all. And yes, there should be a specific time period for which the jobs should remain open to the localites i.e for the first 4 months of the job opening or so. Because, you know, things happen but ONLY When you set a DEAD-LINE…! (like the one you are currently on, Sweta) ;-)

It’s been more than 60 years since our independence. Our erstwhile leaders of the nation, who initiated this reservation, also said that this quota reservation should not be forever. I think the time has come to tone down the reservations and NOT INCREASE It. Maybe decrease it by 2%-5% per decade over the next 3 decades, if they need to have it.

7. How do you ensure your children/family stays in touch with Marathi and Maharashtrian culture? Could you also briefly list the activities of the Mandal?

What Mandal are we talking @? I am sorry but did you mean Maharashtrian mandal in US. The place where we live (Stamford, Connecticut) is about an 1 hour by train from New York, which is where this mandal is but I have never been there.

Our daughter is just 2 years old. We usually speak to her in English but we are never really far from talking in Marathi with her as well. In time, we will try to inculcate some of our traditions & cultural things into her.

But herez the thing. It’s upto an individual or a family to absorb the good things you feel about your culture & someone else’s and run with it ahead in your life. Life will allow everyone to reflect on what good things did culture help everyone learn.

8. Is there anything else you would like to say on the issue?

You tell me. Do you want me to say something specific on anything specific or have I covered everything ?

Fingerprints for cars !!! & more...

Man, i think, is a lazy animal. Although he has been blessed with the multitudes of wrinkles on his grey matter (some of them, at least), which pushes him to find newer ways of discovering comforts., he won't do something unless hez pushed to the corner !!!

What is a pity (and these days, it's in fashion to even say the word 'GREEN') that it isn't always a green way that he designs first...! He will cut trees to build homes, then he will cut more of them to furnish his home. he will 'drink petroleum' to power vechiles on the road or in the air et al and only when the gas price hits beyond the national average of 4$ per gallon, will he think " oh hell, there has to be a better way to do this"..( maybe thats why i m writing this myself).... yeah right !!! Only if the Oil giants allow you to do it !!! Too much of economic dependencies there, if you know what i mean !!!

Just heard a car being stolen in my friend's neighbourhood in Stamford, CT. Apparently, it wasn't a break-in... no glasses broken et al... So, using some clever magnets or tools etc ?? who knows ???

Makes me think on the lines of something which's been revolving in my head for quite a long time.

1. If laptops can be "Logged-On" by recognising finger-prints and even retina-scans, (like in the Cruise movie "Minority Report"), why can't cars be opened the same way ??? Also, on that basis, cars wouldn't also need keys !!!

2. Why none of the 2008 cars, launched in US, use SOLAR POWER to 'HYBRIDIZE' the way the car operates. Ever noticed how hot ur car gets in the open just sitting there, during summer, while you are hogging on that grilled chicken sandwich at a rest-area on the NJ turnpike ???? Cant all that heat be used constructively?

Almost a decade back, when Boris Becker, Pete Sampras were in the form of their life, there was this annual ATP championship held in Stuggart, Germany ( i think, not sure of the venue but somewhere in Germany). Nothign special, eh ? But lsiten to this almost 10 or more years earlier, there was this GREEn thing that the organisers tried out... All the line cameras placed above the courts were operated by the HEAT generated from the players movement on the court. The court surface was made of a special 'substance' that transferred all this heat with little or no losses to these cameras which operated them....

Now think of this, extrapolate this idea to operating street lights on highways...!!! Have these lights built out in a hybrid way ... i.e. Have them work on heat (either from the sun or from the vehicle movement) and when it's below a particular thresh-hold or when the charge on it goes at nught, switch to Normal power...!!!

3. On similar lines, let's say you are averaging 65 MPH or higher on highways. Can't all that windpower, striking against that windshield and all sides of your car be used constructively to do some 'chores' inside the car and give the 'gas' a rest !!!

Same should be able to be extrapolated to aeroplanes !!!

My science teacher from school used to tell me that ideas are important. Implementation, that follows, is just a matter-of-fact-of technology !!!

Now, i may be behind the gun here if someone has already thought of this and gone ahead to implement this.. but just that this thought came to my mind when i was just reading HONDA's new 'WATER-POWERED car....

So if you guys see this getting implemented and the credit lines don't include my name, then you all know where you first heard it on !!!! ;-)

Since i don't have a voice recorder, i will keep writing in with all such things, as and when !!!..

Until the next bright idea, Alvida !!!

Cheers,
Nikhil.

Luck favours the 'maa-ki'

"Luck favours the brave".. In this case, it's truly the case of favouring the lucky, else, there's no reason how edges to the keeper keep going un-noticed ... There's no bravery in that... Cowardice, maybe, .. all marketed under the name of gamesmanship and professionalism. All this, IMHO !!!!

Just how much more luck will Symonds enjoy???

After the India - Australia Test series 2007-08, wherein he drank from a cool pool of good luck and saw the series end 2-1 in Aussie favour when it should really have been in India favour , his tryst with destiny continues !!! I was lucky enough to catch this on the web.

I wanted to write a huge essay on this but i think, for now, this link ( from cricino) will suffice in telling the moral of my story....

http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/wivaus/content/current/story/354618.html

Maybe 2008 is his lucky year... Off late, i have been a strong believer of the "law of averages"... barring IPL, wherein i was banking on that to go against Rajasthan Royals, i think Symonds will also have this hit him... or more so, i want this to hit him...! Lucky 'maa-ki', eh !!!

India -Aus CB Series- 2nd final : Revenge is Sweet

So the Divine Power was readin my earlier email ;-) We did it...! Whata humdinger ... !
FEDEX now has a TIGER BALM SHIPMENT to Brisbane... Overnight Delivery...!Sweet #$%*^*) revenge...! :)

There are however 3 incidents which happened today :
Michael Clarke should have been reminded hez playing cricket, not rugbyhttp://broadband.indiatimes.com/videoshow/2836268.cms
It's interesting how these things are NOT being played to the gallerywhen the Aussies are in question. This was incident 1.In all my senses that i was at that hour of the night, it lookedobvious to me that after Clarke realised that he cudnt stopped theball, he just pulled Sachin down. He surely thought he wud get awaywith a rubgy tackle. and he did. Much bcos of SRT's willingness totake it lightly. And yes, the cameras didnt even show Michael Clarkeapologizing. But Simon Taufel did speak to SRT then.. Wonder what didthey talk @. But then, the Aussie commentrators know which things to blow out ofproportion and which not to, unlike our Indian commentrators..especially, guys like Srikant & the ever so big mouthed,Sivaramakrishnan.

Incident 2: Sachin's shot, the invention of the summer ( he playedthat in the last test too against lee) & also in cricket, playing theball almost behind him with the bat parallel to the ground and theface of the bat, facing up to the sky.. I have never seen a fieldplacement like pointing had for that shot...a deep third man, a finethird man and a man between the fine third man and the keeper but onthe boundary... :-) Well, coming to the point, When sachin played thatshot, Mitchel Johnson's foot clearly touched the rope while fieldingthe ball.. But the commentrators decided to downplay the whole thing. And they never re-visited it... The 3rd umpire took just 2 shots tocome to this conclusion which was not at all straight-forward.Indian commentrators, are you learning from this ?It's just luck that those 2 runs didn't come into play at the death.

Incident 3: Sreesanth got Hussey to underedge his ball to the keeper (which in my opinion, was the turning point of the run-chase). Theumpire Simon Taufel refers it to the 3rd umpire to see if Dhoni hastaken it cleanly or not. Now here's the fun part : Since it's anAussie 'life' at stake, the 3rd umpire goes the extra step and doesntgive Hussey out on the basis of whether it carried to Dhoni or not..he chooses to go for the Snickometer confirmation... Errr., cansomeone tell us why ? Wasnt he just supposed to tell us if it carriedor not... ? Bloody hell.
I, for one, will NEVER EVER blame our local Indian umpires from nowon. Tendency to incline towards the home team is Omnipresent, ont justin Indian umpires. In such cases, it becomes more blatant. We Indians shudnt be sant-mahatmas when it comes to giving it back, whatever thesituation, cricket or otherwise.

As i said, it's sweet redemption for the Indians... It's upto theIndia media to think before harping on their home team's failures andtake a leaf from other medias to stand behind their own people. Not tomention, India peolpe shud also think of more that what just sellsbig. Else, there was no reason crucifying Symonds in the media for hisaction post-Sydney on one hand And on the other hand, handing out 1.3million to him for IPL.Dumbos @ BCCI, just open ur @#%^&*)*&^%%&* mind & embrace ICL for thebetterment of Indian cricket.

Phew, it has been a long emotional winter here in the US. But it endedjust perfect. Kya bowling attack dikh raha hain apna:1st String: Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma,R.P.Singh, Sreesanth,Bhaji2nd String: Irfan Pathan, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, ChawlaUV's form has been up & down though. Donno if Ganguly will be given alook in. With MSD at the helm of thigns, doesnt look like. The good thigns @ both finals:Bhajji claimed both Hayden & Symonds in both matches.. Wahey Guru DaKhalsa.. Wahey guru di Fateh ! the joy on his face was terrific & hemade sure the Aussie public knew @ it, after the win.

P.S. - Sreesanth's wicket of Hussey turned decisively in ourfavour.Yes, he was our best bowler last season but then, he didnt playfor 3 months , was recovering from an injury & was clobbered in thelast Sydney ODI against Australia... But he was really toned down interms of his antics today & bowled really well....Praveen kumar beingthe surprise package of both the finals !!!Hope this puts a stop to all SRT critics for some time (coz they wontrest until he dies) who say he doesnt perform while chasing & in bigmatches.. he did it twice in 2 matches now... and IMHO, hez the mainreason why we won the ODI series & didnt lose the test series 4-0.That reminds me .. in which hellh@le is Manjrekar right now?

Rumour has it that his contract has been renewed... under the clause that he write his opinion only when SRT is in a bad patch.. translates to being employed for some 2 -3 weeks a year.

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown

I have been watching this India Australia series very keenly(to put itmildly), even if it means staying up the whole night for anrain-interrupted ODI or for 5 days of Test match cricket. But eversince the Sydney test, matters have gotten even more interesting.Never ever were we done in Big time as we were in the Sydney test.Hence, it was only sweet revenge that we won the Perth test. The 2-1Test series result, in my eyes, clearly belongs to India & neverAustralia. The big desi cricketing community here that I have beenexposed to over this period also seems to agree to this school ofthought primarily.
The subject of my email is something which Bhajji said, just a fewdays ago. They feel the crown is slipping & hence r getting moreaggressive @ it. It's however clear that the Aussies aren't what theyused to be and that's what worrying them. They lost a match each toIndia & SL & they almost lost 2 matches again to India. I , as acricket fan would have really liked the 1st match to continue whichwas rain-abandoned & our last one with them did give the aussies a"Goti-Galey-Mein" situation.
Yet, it's interesting the way the sledging has been handled. Cantunderstand it. The match referee admits that Ishant Sharma wasprovoked by Hayden & Symonds, yet fines him. Bhajji is probablyprovoked everytime he breathes out there, yet in the meeting, Symondswho has incited him time and again, is left clean in the hearing postthe test-series.
Big-Fat-Arse Hayden is let-off with a reprimand after publicly denuding Bhajji.Hayden haters, please go here :http://kingcricket.blogspot.com/search/label/Matthew%20Hayden
In any troubled environment, rarely have I ever seen the instigator goscot-free.In crime, one can always claim "killed the burglar/thief/mugger inself-defence" and walk out of the court being hailed as a brave man.
A cricket field is different. No lives are at stake, although you dooccasionally see the odd column @ some individual killing himself orsomeone else over a close cricket match. Per se, it's mostly someAsian country bumpkin.
But that doesn't mean you can say or do anything. I am honestly tiredof the gutter-mouthedness of the aussies. They call it their Aussiecode of conduct. F#ck their code of conduct.I m also tired of how lamethe ICC is, as an organization. If Ganguly or even Rashid Latif .whenthey were captain, claim a false catch , the goras hand themsuspensions while Ponting goes scott-free when he claims false catches& asks Indian reporters to take a hike in a press conference for notbelieving …err his integrity… huh ! Does he have any ???
It's such a shame everything India or the Indian board does & will do,in retaliation is taken as a case of a cash-rich board's arm twistingtactics. Aussies reporters are spending realms of pages on theinternet on writing "But he did it first, miss" syndrome thatapparently Indian cricketrs are suffering from… Can anyone tell mewhat are we supposed to do, tehn ? When, on a cricket field, someoneabuses your family , we are expected to…. Err….Just sit there and takeit on the chin? In the stomach? On the groin? Well, if it's a sport,is it the Aussie code of conduct to slam your family? As Ranatungasaid it once " We know what culture the Australian culture is derivedfrom". Oh , so true..
Again, it shows how the rules are lame when goras do it. Yes, I msaying it's a surely a racial thing going on there. Take into accountthis. Why else wud the Indian High commission issue a statement toIndians in Australia to avoid staying in Aussie-strong localities inAustralia, following increased attacks on Indians there?
You know, after we lost the Sydney test, I felt there was no God.Damage control was quick to follow in Perth.
Hence, it will only be poetic justice if we defeat them in the finals& take only the 1st 2 matches for it.
If we lose, then we haven't done too bad, in the old Indian mentalityoutlook !!! But if we win, then, in my eyes, then, we would have donethe impossible, Winning the test series 2-1(yes, we did win) and thelast of the CB series.. beating the aussies there. And I know who willbe the happiest members in the Indian team
Sure, that would make the Aussies feel like they have stuck up 5fingers with TIGER balm up their dirty asses! But , by then, who caresa f#ck !
Is the Divine Power above reading this ???
